Interactive Materiality

Material Driven Design - Digital Fabrication - Multimodal Interaction

Developments in soft robotics often prioritize functionality-centered goals at the expense of emotional resonance generated by the robot's design and behaviour. This project explores the design of emotionally engaging soft robotics through the creation of an interactive ‘living object’. This was realized through the fusion of an expressive material composition, consisting of a 3D printed pattern on stretched Lycra, and a multisensory interaction framework. The material’s development followed an iterative process guided by the pursuit of 'otherness', which unveiled a deep comprehension of the material's behaviour. The performative interaction framework converts input modalities into a range of outputs, creating a captivating multi-sensory interaction. This project demonstrates how to design for emotionally engaging soft robotics by integrating touch, sound and sight.
